Lens Implantation

In recent years, the boundaries of refractive surgery have significantly expanded and today it is possible to correct vision for patients with high degrees of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, for those for whom laser correction was contraindicated due to the individual characteristics of the visual system. Implantation of a phakic intraocular lens is also one of the possible ways to correct age-related presbyopia.

Phakic Intraocular Lens Procedure

Intraocular lenses are implanted by our ophthalmologists in Turkey under local anesthesia. If desired, patients can be lulled into twilight sleep. The whole procedure takes about 15 minutes. In the first step, you will receive pain relieving eye drops. After this, a minimal incision is made along the edge of the cornea. Through this hole, the folded lens is placed in front of or behind the iris. The next step is an eye patch, which you will have to wear on your first night. Because lens implantation with an intraocular lens is a minimally invasive procedure, the healing process is fast.

The Advantages of This Type of Correction:

Personalization (making a lens based on the results of a diagnostic examination according to individual parameters)
Implantation through a self-sealing micro-incision
Minimum recovery period
UV protection of the retina
Reversibility of the operation!

Who is Lens Implantation Suitable For?

The general prerequisites for creating an artificial lens are almost the same as for laser eye treatment. It is important that the patient is at least 18 years old, preferably in the mid 20s, so that the eye is complete and does not undergo any changes as a result of growth. If you have a baby with a congenital cataract, lens implantation can be done.

Implantation of a phakic lens is carried out without removing one’s own lens, when natural accommodation is preserved, and allows you to see objects both near and far. This method is more physiological than lens extraction and is reversible. Phakic lens implantation can be compared to correction with contact lenses. Only contact lenses are put on the cornea, and phakic lenses are put on the inside of the eye.

Who Is Eligible For This Surgery?

This type of correction is recommended in the following cases:

myopia up to -30.0 diopters
hyperopia up to +15.0 diopters
astigmatism up to 8.0 diopters
thin cornea
with stabilization of vision after treatment of keratoconus (after cross-linking or intralamellar implantation of corneal segments)
after keratoplasty
