Gastric Sleeve Surgery
What is gastric sleeve surgery?
Gastric sleeve surgery is a weight loss procedure done using a minimally invasive method called laparoscopy. It consists of making small incisions in the skin of the abdomen of approximately 1 cm. 80% of the stomach is removed, leaving it in the form of a tube, thus reducing the stomach’s capacity. After the sleeve surgery, the food you eat will in any case enter and exit the stomach in a similar spot as it did before, but you’ll have a smaller stomach.
How gastric sleeve works?
The gastric sleeve helps you lose weight in two main ways. First, it reduces the size of your stomach, which limits how much food you can eat. Second, it changes the balance of hormones and proteins in your stomach. These changes, including adjustments to hormones like GLP1, help to reduce your appetite. As a result, gastric sleeve patients typically experience rapid weight loss. It’s important to note that your weight loss isn’t just due to the smaller size of your stomach.
How much weight will I Iose?
The main reason most patients choose the gastric sleeve procedure is to lose weight and maintain a healthier lifestyle. It is a highly effective surgery, with research showing an average weight loss of 60-70% of excess weight over a 2-year period. Some studies report even better outcomes, but we believe this is a realistic expectation.
One of the key benefits of this procedure is that it often leads to rapid weight loss by reducing and altering appetite. However, to achieve long-term success in maintaining your weight loss, it’s important to adopt healthy changes in your diet and exercise habits.
Am I suitable for the procedure?
There are multiple factors you need to consider to understand whether you are suitable for gastric sleeve surgery. However, we usually recommend gastric sleeve surgery to people with a body mass index (BMI) of at least 35.
That being said, even if you are suitable for this surgery, there may be better options available for you. It will be easier for you to consider the pros and cons of gastric sleeve when making your decision.
