Duodenal switch is a surgical operation that combines features of both gastric sleeve surgery and gastric bypass. The procedure is performed in two steps. Firstly, 80% of the stomach is removed and the rest of the stomach is turned into a tube. This procedure is referred to as gastric sleeve surgery. In the next step, the small intestine, which is normally connected to the stomach, is separated to form a bypass and two separate pathways and a canal are created. In this way, the food taken goes first to the tube stomach, then to the lower part of the small intestine, not to the beginning of the small intestine, and from there to the large intestine.
Duodenal switch surgery prevents patients from feeling hunger and reduces their appetite, because in this procedure, the part of the stomach that produces hunger is removed.
